On the occasion of “Notte Bianca 2014” (overnight arts festival presented by Municipality of Florence), several art installations have been commissioned to artists. One of the most impressive is Straw Maze, an immense 400 sqm maze composed of 1000 bales of straw developed in collaboration with “Mondo di Paglia”, a green building company advocating for sustainable and ethical construction methods. The maze appeared overnight in front of one of the most famous churches of Florence, Santa Croce, creating a contrast with the historic building. Visitors were invited to navigate through the maze. The immersive and participatory installation draws its inspiration from materials, craftwork, and new architecture; and encourages social engagement to blur the line between art and its audiences.  After the event the straw was delivered to farms in Tuscany for mushroom mulch and animal bedding, completing a cost-effective cycle of sustainability.
